THE CHESS HOTEL

This smart hotel will fit the bill for those aiming to be at the heart of the action as it is perfectly placed for easy access to all the major regions of the Right Bank, offering some of the best foodie spots in the city - The Louvre, Opéra, Palais Royal for culture and the Marais for retail pursuits. The hotel has a distinct boutique vibe - the trademark blending of classic and contemporary style and decoration by interior designers Patrick Gilles and Dorothee Bossier, resulting in rooms of warm wood, muted tones and chic monotone accents with elegant furnishings and fittings. Ideal for visitors partial to modish design hotels. Families of more than 4 can book inter connecting rooms, whilst families of 3, with a child under 12, can enjoy the fact that the child sleeps free of charge if sharing the main bed. The hotel does a good job servicing families, not only providing a lovely place to lay their heads but offering useful additional services such as babysitting and baby equipment if needed. Guests can also access the beautiful pool in the sister hotel, the luxurious Roch Hotel and Spa, a few streets away where lucky parents can also find indulgence and respite at the spa. Back at the Chess, we suggest borrowing the hotel’s boardgames to entertain youngsters on quiet nights in whilst enjoying a glass or two in the dapper lobby or partake in the sweet delights of Afternoon Tea.  Both activities highly recommended after a full day exploring the city, enticing all - young or old.

GONTRAN CHERRIER

LUNCH  /  SNACK  /  PÂTISSERIE

Gontran is part of the new breed of bakers making their mark on the French capital, pushing traditional methods further and approaching their craft with a fresh, exciting vibrancy. He is revered for adding a dash of creativity as a vital ingredient in his baking so you must stop by for some inventive breads full of his signature colour, distinctive flavour and choice ingredients to nibble as you explore the cobbled streets around the Montmartre. The bakery here is modern – white underground style tiles, wood and marble - and very child friendly encouraging local schoolchildren to pop along for slices of gourmet bread topped lavishly with chocolate or caramel spreads, educating them in tastes, ingredients and culinary possibilities. Parisians visit at lunchtimes for tasty and generous sandwiches of varying styles, and the walk away from the tourist heavy Montmartre is worth it for mid-day eats. Pick up some of the delicious pâtisserie too for sweat treats at snack time. You will never think of bread in the same way again.

LIFESTYLE / DESIGN

EMPREINTES is a wonderful 4 storey concept store set up by the Ateliers d’Art de France to showcase and promote the creativity and work of French craft producers. Take time to explore the beautiful collections on display, ranging from jewellery, ceramics, art and homewares. The minimalistic setting mimics a gallery vibe encouraging customers to take a moment to browse, explore and learn about the products and producers, appreciating the talent and innovation of the artists instead of merely purchasing goods.

Don't leave without stopping by the café on the first floor serving health driven snacks, cakes and sandwiches along with quality coffee and fresh juices, presented in the tableware on sale in the shop, effectively allowing you to try before you buy.

Located neatly in the Marais, Empreintes is a worthy addition to the region's exciting retail scene and one to add when shopping in the area.  With pieces large and small this is the ultimate souvenir shopping to take ‘one of a kind’ mementoes for yourself or loved ones, whilst supporting these highly skilled artisans.

SNACK

Those in need of a sugar rush, a little tasty pick me up or indeed tiring of rich French pâtisserie, look no further than Boneshaker Doughnuts for top notch, sticky delights. These handmade American style doughnuts of various creative concoction, colour and flavour will make your mouth water on sight. Husband and wife team Amanda Bankert and Louis Scott's hunch that Paris and sweet toothed Parisians were ready to embrace this US classic has paid off with locals and visitors to the city hunting them out to enjoy the changing flavours including apple pie, caramel, fig and walnut and the popular whisky maple and bacon. The team put great care and time into every batch, adopting an artisanal approach to guarantee quality, taste and visual impact, resulting in small daily runs of fresh fluffy doughnuts. Cleverly they have recently added a selection of Vegan doughnuts to the menu. The tiny shop offers quality filtered coffee and homemade lemonade to sip on the side. If young ones have toured the Louvre with grace reward them with a treat from here to eat in nearby Jardin Du Palais Royal.

To get to doughnut heaven be quick as they often sell out by midday.
